Are Dodge and RAM the Same?

The Dodge company has existed since 1900, producing military and civil vehicles, sports coupes, and SUVs. By the early 1980s, there were more pickups on America’s roads. Then the Dodge company decided to release the line of cars on the basis of low-tonnage trucks (up to 4 tons). The new pickups received a name, which would later be called the Ram brand. They were equipped with a passive safety system. Carrying capacity varied depending on the model – 0.5 t to 1 t (for Power Ram and Dodge Ram).

First Models of Dodge RAM

In 1981, Dodge presented the first RAM pickups. The model range differed in terms of carrying capacity – 150, 250, 350 – which increased with the new generation. The cars had the same design as the Dodge D pickups. The first line received large taillights with rounded corners, as well as a new body shape. In the late 80s, cars were equipped with a fuel injection system. This increased their power. Fuel consumption was reduced by an automatic transmission with overdrive. The new model was named the A500 and was supplied with V6 and V8 engines.

  • The 1991 Ram car brand has redesigned the grille, although it retains the classic rectangular headlights. The engine was also upgraded.
  • In 1993, a new engine model was introduced. Distributed fuel injection has appeared, which affects the power of the engine. And the increase in the compression ratio of the cylinder made it possible to economically consume fuel.

Second-Generation RAM Trucks

Research and development for the RAM trucks continued until 1992. Dodge redesigned its pickup lineup in 1994. The second generation offered the same engine options as the first, plus a Cummins turbo diesel. The latest version of the lineup included a new 8-liter V10 engine. Storage options have been rethought. The cabin was equipped with a spacious glove compartment and an armrest between the front seats. The space behind the seats has increased.

By the end of the 90s, the company updated the passive safety system and the digital odometer displaying the mileage. Rounded mirrors have replaced square rear-view mirrors. Dodge’s sports models had updated front end, a clear glass instead of fluted headlights, the redesigned bumper, and the grille painted in body color.

New Improvements of RAM Pickups

The third generation saw the light of day with a range of improvements. This line of cars had an updated chassis, gearbox, suspension, design. Sheet metal was used for the body. They decided to replace the drive axle. Instead of it, the RAM pickups received a front independent suspension in the 1500 model. Models 2500 and 3500 remain unchanged.

  • 2006 was a year of change for the Dodge Ram. One of the more notable features added was the Mega Cab. This type of cab is considered the most spacious. There is more space and a 6.25-foot cargo box. The seats are suitable for six people. The design of the headlights has changed. The model has been complemented by a full-screen navigation system that has been incorporated into the dashboard.
  • The 2007 model was equipped with a 6.7 liter Cummins diesel engine, a standard width frame chassis, and a 3500 cab. The G56 model retained the manual transmission.

Fourth Generation

The fourth-generation RAM trucks were introduced in 2008. Several new models appeared – 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500, including dually trucks.

  • In 2009, the suspension was changed, the design of the four-door cab was updated, and a powerful Hemi engine appeared. According to the new concept, the walls of the pickup truck were equipped with storage for the valuables. The Rambox system made it possible to do this. It was improved in later models with keyless access.
  • In 2010, the Ram Trucks brand was formed.

Competitors have abandoned the use of a manual transmission. Models of Chevrolet Silverado trucks and Ford Super Duty pickups, produced after 2006, operate only on the automatic transmission. Ram cars, on the other hand, have an exclusive manual transmission.

In the Ram 1500, a four-door Crew Cab replaced the Mega Cab. The rear seats now can be folded back. Legroom remained the same, so any seats accommodate the passengers with the same comfort. Only the Ram 2500 and 3500 models retained the Mega Cab.

RAM trucks rarely let go of those who once became interested in them. It remains to decide on the model and equipment.

When choosing a modification and type of engine, decide which of the arguments suit you the most:

  • You prefer a more fashionable car, like aggressive driving, high speed, and faster acceleration. You operate the car mostly in the city, and the difference in the price of fuel and consumption is not very important for you. In this case, the Dodge Ram 1500 is undoubtedly your choice.
  • You like hunting or fishing, prefer a calm, even ride. You have a large family and often have to travel very long distances. You have a camper or a boat, or you enjoy the monotonous rumbling of a diesel engine. No doubt, the diesel Dodge Ram 2500 series is your choice.
  • You live in difficult climatic conditions or like off-road driving. You have to carry heavy equipment or a huge trailer. If these statements are about you, then your best option is the Dodge Ram 3500.
