History of the Volvo Brand: Are Volvo Cars a Good Buy?

Despite average reliability ratings, Volvo is one of the most ambitious auto manufacturers, focusing on safety. The history of the Volvo brand began in 1915 in Sweden. The concern is known for producing cars and trucks, engines for construction equipment, and buses. Since 1999, passenger car production has changed owners several times and is now not owned by the concern.

The Volvo brand history has always been closely related to the American market. Until 1986, it was the leading export destination. After a redistribution of influence and a drop in sales, Volvo sold passenger car production to Ford.

Despite repeated changes in ownership, the first American plant opened in Charleston in 2018. In addition, divisions of the previously acquired Volvo Group are operating in the United States: American Mack trucks and branches of other production facilities.

How reliable is the Volvo XC90?

The Volvo XC90 SUV was a 2023 IIHS Top-Safety Pick + winner, proving its reliability. With proper maintenance, you can count on a Volvo SUV to last up to 200,000 miles on Indiana roads.

Manufacturer Country: Who Makes Volvo Cars?

who makes volvo cars

The country of origin of the Volvo car is Sweden. The company was registered in 1915 as a subsidiary of the famous bearing manufacturer SKF. Assar Gabrielson became the managing director, and Gustav Larson - the chief engineer. You can find their monuments at the headquarters in Gothenburg.

The production of passenger cars is established at several factories in Sweden (Gothenburg, Skövd, Ulufström), the USA (Charleston), Belgium (Ghent), and China (Chengdu, Zhangjiakou).

Are Volvos expensive to maintain?

If compared to a non-luxury vehicle, a Volvo car may be more expensive to maintain. Yet compared to BMW and Mercedes-Benz luxury brands, Volvo's service costs are on the lower end of the spectrum. Average Volvo maintenance and repair costs in Indiana are around $13,500 during their first 10 years of operation.

Stages of Volvo Brand Development

The full use of the brand as a car manufacturer began in 1927 when the first production copy was released - ÖV4, or Jacob. In 1935, the company gained independence and increased production: several series with closed and open tops saw the light of day.

A period of prosperity was associated with 1956 and the new president of the concern, Gunnar Engellau. The conquest of the US market, which became the largest export destination, began. Production capacity and cash flow actively increased. In 1958, engineer Nils Ivar Bohlin was hired and designed a three-point seat belt. This marked one of the most important company values - the protection of the driver and passengers.

In subsequent years, engineers introduce several new products:

  • 1960 – two-seater sports P1800;
  • 1966 - Volvo 144 with a dual-circuit brake system and a body with deformable zones for additional safety of those in the cabin;
  • 1976 - presentation of an oxygen sensor, a catalytic converter - a component of an internal combustion engine to reduce the toxic effect of exhaust gases.

In 1999, the concern sold a line of passenger cars to Ford. Since then, the line has expanded significantly. However, due to the economic crisis of 2008, they reduced staff, and negotiations began on financial assistance both with the Swedish government and with other investors. As a result, in 2010, the passenger car division was sold to the Chinese Geely Automobile: new factories appeared, and the model range was updated.

History of the Volvo Logo

used volvo cars for sale from a dealer in Indiana | volvo logo history

The first version of the Volvo logo appeared in 1927 on the radiator grille of the Jacob model. It was an ancient sign of iron and Mars, the god of war: a silver circle with an arrow pointing up and to the right. A stripe of the same color crossed the bars diagonally.

The Volvo emblem has remained the same. Since 2006, the logo has had a three-dimensional appearance, retaining the original symbolism but adding the company name in white font on a blue background. Silver elements denote sophistication, and blue color - reliability.

What does the name "Volvo" mean?

The word "Volvo" is of Latin origin and means "I roll." Initially, this was the slogan of the SKF company, but later, the word became the name of the subsidiary company.

Volvo Electrification Strategy

Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric for sale IN

Volvo is preparing to release six new products in the next three years, one of which will be a minivan. It is assumed that the luxury MPV of the Swedish brand will be based on the Zeekr 009, which was declassified at the end of last year (both brands are part of the Geely Chinese holding).

Volvo aims to complete the greening of its model range by the end of the current decade. The Swedish manufacturer took one of the main steps in this direction and introduced the brand’s new flagship electric crossover, the Volvo EX90. It is planned to be sold simultaneously with the XC90, equipped with an internal combustion engine).

The manufacturer plans to continue their green line. Volvo will introduce at least six new battery-powered cars by 2026. The Swedish brand intends to turn all its main models into electric vehicles, including not only crossovers but also sedans and station wagons.

Fortunately, traditional combustion vehicles will remain widely represented in the used car market. If you are looking for a high-quality Volvo for sale in Indiana, check our Indianapolis used car dealerships’ inventory and get first-hand driving experience behind the wheel of your favorite model.
