Lincoln car brand history

Founded by Henry Leland in 1917, Lincoln was later acquired by Ford. Ford merged its Mercury brand with Lincoln to form the Lincoln-Mercury division. Since its inception, Lincoln has been known for producing iconic luxury cars. Originally called the Lincoln Motor Company, Lincoln has been a luxury brand for many years. It has gone down in history as one of the automakers whose models revolutionized the American automobile industry.

The pair lasted until 2010 when Mercury was shut down. With the sale of Premier Automotive Group in late 2012, Lincoln became the Lincoln Motor Company again. Today, Lincoln is Ford’s only luxury brand.

Henry Leland helped create two of America’s favorite luxury brands, Lincoln and Cadillac. The two luxury divisions have been competing with each other since their early years. Fast forward 100 years, and the fierce rivalry between Lincoln and Cadillac is still going strong.

Lincoln model range

Lincoln's current lineup includes the midsize MKZ sedan, the Nautilus, the Aviator, the Navigator crossovers, and the classic-design Continental flagship. At used Lincoln car dealerships, customers can also find Lincoln MKC crossovers, Lincoln MKS full-size sedans, and Lincoln MKT mid-size business cars.

While Lincoln's share of the U.S. market is about 1 percent, the brand has maintained a legacy of luxury and innovation for more than 100 years. Its most popular models in the U.S. are the Nautilus, Aviator, and Navigator crossovers.

Lincoln Nautilus

General Motors has been supplying Chinese-made cars to the US market for seven years. Now Ford has followed suit. The first such model at Indiana  auto market will be the second-generation Lincoln Nautilus crossover. Its premiere took place simultaneously at the Shanghai Auto Show and a separate event in America. But, if the 2017 Nautilus was also produced in Canada, the new SUV only has a Chinese origin.

The versions for America and China have visual differences. The American version has door handles for a natural grip, combined with a window molding, like the late Lincoln Continental sedan. You don’t need to pull them: there are buttons on the inner side of the handles to unlock the electromagnetic locks.

The door handles are also made differently (in the American version, they are built into the armrests), but the interior is unified. This is revolutionary for Lincoln: a single, expansive passive screen spans nearly the entire dashboard, showcasing instruments, navigation, and more.

As for technology, the Lincoln Nautilus has retained a simple platform with a transverse engine, albeit in a new version. In front - McPherson struts, in the back - a multi-link. The suspension can only be spring, but for an extra fee - with adaptive shock absorbers. An important update concerns the Lincoln BlueCruise autopilot: in the new iteration, it allows you to drive on highways, release the steering wheel, and change lanes, just by switching on the turn signal.

There is no longer a V6 engine in the range - even for America. The basic version has a 2.0 gasoline turbo four, 253 hp, and 275 lb-ft. The transmission has an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive with a clutch on the rear axle. A hybrid has also been announced. It has the same two-liter turbo engine, an electric motor with a capacity of 136 hp, and an electromechanical variator. Peak output is 314 hp.

Lincoln Aviator

The Lincoln brand has launched the 2025 model year Aviator SUV on the North American market. The luxury model has a fresh exterior and expanded multimedia capabilities, while the technology remains.

The crossover received an enlarged radiator grille, new head optics with running lights that extend onto the grille, and a more complex front bumper.

The interior has larger screens on the front panel - 12.4-inch for gauges and instruments and 13.2-inch for multimedia. The new Digital Experience driver interface is copied from the Ford system of the same name, which debuted earlier this month on the platform-sharing Ford Explorer, which also underwent a restyling. Google and Amazon services, browsers for Internet surfing, Google Assistant and Alexa voice assistants are pre-installed. The standard package now includes the proprietary BlueCruise autopilot, which allows you to take your hands off the wheel on some American roads. Also, the "base" retains the Co-Pilot 360 driving assistant package.

The hybrid power plant for the Aviator is no longer offered - only a three-liter 406-horsepower V6, like the Ford Explorer. The engine is combined with a 10-range automatics and rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive still requires an additional fee. The top-end Black Label package with all available options will cost under 100 thousand dollars.

In two years, the Lincoln Aviator should receive a fully electric successor. It will be the first of five battery-powered new products with which the Lincoln company is going to gradually replace the current crossovers and SUVs. Thus, the current update may be the last for the Lincoln Aviator model.

Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln Navigator Luxury SUV

In the world of luxury SUVs, the Lincoln Navigator has long held a special place. The combination of impressive dimensions, power, and exceptional comfort has made it one of the most popular cars in its segment. However, in 2025, Lincoln decided to raise the bar even higher by introducing an updated Navigator that does not just follow modern trends but sets new industry standards. Its unique features make it a worthy competitor to the Cadillac Escalade and other premium SUVs.

Although the overall proportions and silhouette remain recognizable, Lincoln designers have done a significant job updating the exterior. The front grille has become even more impressive, and the new headlights and taillights have received updated LED optics, emphasizing the modern style of the car. Standard 22-inch wheels can be replaced with optional 24-inch ones, which adds even more aggression and dynamics to the exterior. The main highlight of the interior is the new 48-inch infotainment display, which stretches almost across the entire width of the dashboard. This is not just a screen, but a central element that unites all the control and entertainment functions in the car.

Front-row passengers can enjoy heated and cooled massage seats that provide maximum comfort. As an option, the similar massage seats can be installed in the second row, which makes long-distance travel even more enjoyable.

Even third-row passengers, who often remain in the shadows in other cars, can enjoy heated seats.

The 2025 Lincoln Navigator can boast the “Rejuvenate” function, which combines interior fragrances, ambient lighting, massage functions, and climate control into a single complex of specific actions.

Another important innovation is the Ford BlueCruise automated driving system. It allows the car to move on the highway without driver intervention, keeping it in its lane and controlling speed and distance to the preceding vehicle, braking when needed.

Although the 2025 Lincoln Navigator has received many updates, its powertrain has remained unchanged. Under the hood is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that develops 440 horsepower. This engine, quality-proven in previous models, provides impressive dynamics and the power required for a confident drive in the city and on the highway.
