Who uses the digital titling system in Indiana?

All lenders can participate, but those who handle ten or more liens each year must join. The Indiana BMV will also change all old paper titles to electronic ones for $0.25 per document, plus any other notification fees.

How do I get my title?

What happens when my auto loan is paid off?

When you pay off your auto loan, the lienholder will send a lien release to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles using the digital titling system. If there are no other liens on the vehicle, they will print the document, confirming your rights as a vehicle owner, and send it to you. If another lien isn’t electronic, the title will still go to the initial lienholder. If the other lien is also electronic, the title will remain digital.

What if I’m moving out of state with an electronic title?

If you are moving to another state, just let your lienholder know. They will ask the BMV for a paper title. Once it’s ready, it will be mailed to the address they provide, and you can then transfer it to your new state authorities.

What if I’m moving to Indiana with an electronic title from another state?

You should address your local BMV branch in Indiana. Tell them you’ve moved from another US state and want to request your title from your lienholder.

Once your lienholder gets this request from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, they will need to get a paper document from your previous state. After that, they will send it to your local BMV branch in Indiana for processing. If your lienholder is part of E-lien program IN, you will have the electronic title.
