Today, we prepared an overview of the Chevy Silverado's history to help you track changes through generations and discover more about the build quality of this legendary pickup.
Production of the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck began in 1998, in parallel with a similar GMC Sierra model. The Silverado was produced in RWD and AWD versions with various modifications of the passenger cabin, cargo platform, and vehicle versions:
In 2003, the world market saw a restyled version of the first generation (GMT 800 restyling), equipped with an improved engine that developed power up to 345 hp.
In 2004, a new hybrid power plant began to be installed on the car.
In 2007, Chevrolet announced the GMT 900 version and suspended production of the first gen.
The max towing capacity of older Silverado pickup trucks is around 7500 pounds. However, the current generation of the Silverado 1500 models is 13300 pounds.
In 2007, the manufacturer released the second-generation Chevrolet Silverado, which differed radically from its previous version. The changes affected both the technical characteristics and chassis, as well as the exterior and interior. Modification options and the heavy-duty version have been preserved, which is good news. The competitor's GMC Sierra was also updated and received the GMT 902 platform. Compared to its predecessors, the second generation, in addition to visual and technical improvements, also had aerodynamic ones, significantly reducing fuel consumption.
Unfortunately, statistics have shown that the second generation has become less in demand. Sales decreased from 650 thousand to 400 thousand vehicles.
But despite this, this Chevy car was able to receive as many as two “Pickup Truck 2007” awards according to authoritative publications, including Motor Trend magazine.
The main features separating the Chevy Silverado truck from the GMC Sierra 1500 include size, features, and cost. The Silverado 1500 comes as a more advantageous option in terms of price, while the Sierra 1500 offers a more upgraded design and cutting-edge technology features.
The third generation debuted in 2012 and went on sale in 2013. The new models experienced external changes, especially noticeable in the front part. If before this truck was simple and rough, then it became more modern and stylish. This is the overall picture that emerges when you compare the optics, radiator grille, bumper, and hood of the two Silverado generations. The taillights are also different. Modifications remained the same for cab and cargo areas. There are Chevrolet Silverado WT, LS, and premium LTZ trim levels. In addition, a Custom version of the Z71 with 20-inch wheels appeared. And, of course, everyone’s favorite Heavy Duty truck.
Engine range: 4.3 l V6 (195 hp), 4.8 l V8 (295 hp), 5.3 l V8 (315 hp), 6.0 l V8 (367 hp), 6.2 l V8 (403 hp).
All changes are made to keep up with the times. But whatever they say, the Silverado remains everyone’s favorite American pickup truck with character. The market for pickup trucks is not as large as, for example, sedans or hatchbacks, but there are worthy opponents here, for example, Ford with the F-150 and RAM 1500 models. But the 4th-gen Chevy Silverado has a wealth of bold solutions in terms of technology and design that are not entirely customary for such vehicles. For example, the Trail Boss package includes:
The changes affected the length, which increased by approximately 2 inches. The wheelbase has become wider by 4 inches. But it has become 452 lbs lighter, which is surprising because the dimensions have become larger. It's all about the materials from which the pickup is made. There are more aluminum elements, and the steel frame began to weigh 88 lbs less.
The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country can boast wood trim, leather seating, and plenty of advanced tech, making it an excellent fit for those who want a luxury pickup truck.
The new Silverado 1500 in 2023 did not receive major changes compared to its predecessor but still became stronger.
General Motors offers a range of engines to suit any task and fuel economy: a four-cylinder turbocharged internal combustion engine, two V8, and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel motor. The eight-cylinder engine with a volume of 6.2 liters and a power of 420 hp is the most powerful of the entire lineup. From 0 to 60 mph, a car with such an engine accelerates in just 5.4 seconds.
Chevrolet says that the 2023 model year trucks have received several innovative technologies increasing power, torque, and dynamics. In particular, the fuel injectors with a modified turbocharger and precise temperature control, and new steel pistons.
As for the transmission, everything is simple—the pickup has a 10-speed automatics. There are no problems with handling and maneuverability – good achievement, considering the gigantic dimensions and high body height.
Since pickups like the Chevy Silverado are purchased primarily to perform utilitarian tasks, one of the key criteria is payload and towing capabilities. The maximum towing capacity of the pickup is 13,300 pounds, which surpasses Dodge RAM 1500 by 550 pounds but is inferior to the Ford F-150 by 700 pounds.
Of course, only a pickup truck with a 6.2-liter V8 under the hood can offer maximum capabilities. The same 5.3-liter engine can tow approximately 11,460 pounds, and the four-cylinder internal combustion engine equipped with turbocharging is designed for only 9,500 pounds. The vehicle’s carrying capacity is much more modest – depending on the version, it ranges from 1870 to 2280 pounds.
The Chevrolet Silverado goes head-to-head with similar pickup trucks in many terms, including price. Healthy competition is fully manifested: for almost the same money, you can choose from at least three worthy models, each representing not less than five trim levels to suit every taste and budget. And, due to its high popularity, there are plenty of options in the Indiana used car market. Visit Indy Auto Man to choose your favorite Chevy Silverado and compare it with competitors in one place.
