The first Jeep vehicle was built in 1945 for the US military. At the time, it was called the Willys MB, Willys Jeep, or Jeep. Subsequently, this name became one of the most famous not only in America but also throughout the world. Throughout its history, the brand has created legendary models such as the Grand Wagoneer, Cherokee, and Wrangler, which can be easily found in most nearby used car lots in Indiana as well as any other US state. However, the Wrangler has yet to become the best-selling model in the brand's history.
We've identified the most popular SUV models of all time, based on total sales figures. Let's take a look at the leaders, starting with the 10th best-selling model and working our way up to the number one spot.
The Jeep Commander XK was a three-row midsize SUV that only came in one generation and was built on the same platform as the famous Grand Cherokee WK. The Commander had a boxy design like the Liberty KK and was represented on various markets with diesel and gasoline engines, and in the US, its home country, with V6 and V8 PowerTech, as well as a V8 Hemi. It never met expectations - less than a quarter million units found their buyers from 2005 to 2010 production years.
The modern Jeep Gladiator is a mid-size pickup truck based on the Wrangler, codenamed JT. It was manufactured from 1963 to 1971 with a wide range of engines, from a 3.8-liter inline-six to a 6.6-liter V8. Within that period at least 165,000 Gladiator vehicles found their owners. The new JT is based on the four-door Wrangler Unlimited and has been on sale since 2019. Over the past five years, more than 360,000 Jeep Gladiators have been sold, for a grand total of almost 530,000 since production started.
The Jeep Wagoneer has been around since 1963 and has always been a trailblazer in SUVs.
The abbreviation SJ means the first generation of Wagoneer, while XJ, the second generation, was produced from 1983, and the third generation, ZJ, introduced in 1993. In 2022, Jeep manufacturers represented the fourth generation (WS), and in 2024, they introduced the current fifth generation of Wagoneer, called S, a fully electric model.
Sales figures from 70 years ago are inaccurate, but almost 400,000 SJs and XJs were sold between 1963 and 1994. The Grand Wagoneer nameplate was also on the Jeep JZ - the same platform as the trendy Grand Cherokee in the 1980s. The name has been revived for the new 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer line of luxury full-size SUVs, codenamed WS.
The short-lived Patriot, a compact crossover that competed with the similar but differently styled Compass, achieved about 800,000 in total sales. The Patriot was manufactured in one generation (MK47) from 2006 to 2016, with a facelift in 2011. It featured traditional Jeep boxy styling and was available with petrol and diesel four-cylinder engines. Few people were thrilled when it entered the markets, but the compact crossover managed to sell 73,000 items each year.
The Jeep manufacturers have sold the Compass so much better than the Patriot because it was in production for so much longer. And it is still on sale today, with about 1.75 million items in total. The original MK49 was produced simultaneously with the first Patriot, aiming at a progressive audience, with a more rounded shape and hidden rear door handles. Its successor (MP552) appeared ten years later and is still in showrooms, including the off-road Trailhawk, which is quite a rare trim for compact crossovers.
The CJ is the original Jeep, known under many names (such as Willys or simply Jeep). During the years of sales from 1945 to 1986, about 1.81 million vehicles found their owners. The CJ-2, used by US troops in World War II, went through several updates until it was replaced by the CJ-7 in 1986. There was even a version under the Mitsubishi brand. Among all generations, the Jeep CJ-5 was the most successful model, produced for several decades and found more than 600,000 owners.
It never attracted Americans, but this did not stop the Renegate from achieving total sales of over 2 million. This little crossover doesn’t claim to be the best in its class, even though it has classic Jeep styling and the off-road Trailhawk trim. However, it is popular in many parts of the world, which has helped the Renegade set an impressive sales record, supported by ten years in production up to these days in some countries.
Since its introduction in 1986 as the successor to the CJ, the Wrangler has stood the test of time as a true classic Jeep SUV, starting with the YJ version and remaining popular to this day. Even its newest versions are true to the enduring values of the CJ, such as a removable windshield and doors. In addition, it has a ladder frame chassis with axles at the front and rear. It is no wonder that the Jeep Wrangler sales exceeded the five million mark.
The Cherokee (SJ) was introduced in 1973 and initially designed with a ladder frame, but it transitioned into a compact SUV with a unibody construction starting from the second generation (XJ) in 1984. One of the most recognizable vehicles in American history, the Cherokee has been in continuous production ever since and so far demonstrated an impressive 5.3 million total sales. The KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012) generations were called Liberty in North America but remained Cherokee in the rest of the world. The fifth (KL) generation Cherokee left the market in 2023.
The Grand Cherokee is the most popular Jeep ever, introduced in 1992 as a 1993 model, with total sales since then of approximately 7.1 million, and the most recognizable midsize Jeep SUV. The Grand Cherokee was attractive from the start, and its design went through four generations before its latest iteration, the WL, debuted in 2021. The contemporary luxury cruiser is a far cry from the basic original model of the 1990s. Yet, it still retains the unmistakable Jeep identity cherished by countless American motorists.
